October Core Value: The Golden Rule

In October, we focus on one of the greatest principles we live by at MTN OPS, the Golden Rule. Most of us have heard it since childhood: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

When we add an eternal perspective, the principle deepens. What if we thought of it this way: Do unto others as you would have God do unto you.

This truth is taught with remarkable clarity in Alma 41:14 - 15:

“Therefore, my son, see that you are merciful unto your brethren; deal justly, judge righteously, and do good continually; and if ye do all these things then shall ye receive your reward; yea, ye shall have mercy restored unto you again; ye shall have justice restored unto you again; ye shall have a righteous judgment restored unto you again; and ye shall have good rewarded unto you again. For that which ye do send out shall return unto you again, and be restored.”

This scripture teaches that what we send out will be returned to us. Mercy brings mercy. Justice brings justice. Righteous judgment brings righteous judgment. Good brings good. That is the Golden Rule eternalized. The way God will one day treat us is directly connected to how we have treated others.

Christ illustrated this in the parable of the unforgiving servant. A king forgave a man of an impossible debt. Yet that same man, once freed, refused to forgive another of a much smaller debt. Because he failed to extend the mercy he had received, his forgiveness was taken away. The lesson is clear. We cannot expect from God what we are unwilling to extend to others.

At MTN OPS, our Golden Rule core value states it this way: We believe in the Golden Rule and in treating you and everyone exactly as we would like to be treated, regarding honesty, responsiveness, follow-through, and going the extra mile to ensure that your needs and desires are met.

As we strive to live by the Golden Rule, we will inevitably fall short. But Jeffrey R. Holland once shared, “The thing God loves most about being God is being merciful.” With the mercy He extends time and again, we are given opportunities to change, to learn, to grow, to improve, and ultimately to connect more fully with Him.

This month, let us pause and ask ourselves: Am I extending to others the same mercy, patience, and goodness that I hope to receive from God one day? When we live this way, the Golden Rule becomes more than a childhood lesson. It becomes a pathway to eternal rewards.
