Conquer Corner: Opportunity

I have been thinking a lot about opportunity lately.

Not just the kind we chase in business or goals, but the kind that shapes who we become.

On Memorial Day, I visited the cemetery where my father is buried and sat at his graveside. As I reflected on his life, I found myself replaying something I heard over and over again at his funeral. Dozens of people, now adults with families, careers, and lives of their own, shared a similar message about him.

They said, “Your dad loved me into my potential.”

That phrase has stayed with me.

My father was a leader in many ways, but one of the most impactful roles he had was serving with hundreds of young missionaries, young men, and young women. They were away from home for the first time, trying to figure out who they were and what they were capable of. And yet, the way they described him wasn’t about authority or position; it was about how he made them feel. He saw something in them, believed in them, and, most importantly, helped them see it in themselves.

As I reflected on that, I realized that’s exactly what he did for me.

Every conversation I had with him, right up until the end, he never missed the chance to tell me what he was proud of. He created an environment where I felt seen, capable, and encouraged to grow.

He gave me opportunity.

Not by handing me anything, but by helping me believe in what I could become.

While sitting there, I listened to a voice recording of a conversation I once had with him. He didn’t know I was recording it. In that conversation, he spoke about his deep love for Jesus Christ and the miracles performed.

At one point, he said something that got him excited, and I loved re-hearing his voice share this.

He said, “Think about it, Jesus knows our past, exactly what we are doing in the present, and our great potential in the future.”

Then he paused, took a deep breath, and with a quiet smile said, “How would it be…”

And he continued, expressing a deeper love and appreciation for the Savior.

That moment hit me differently as I sat there.

Because that is the ultimate example of opportunity.

To be known completely, past, present, and future, and still be loved. Not just loved as we are, but loved in a way that calls us higher. Loved into our potential.

That is what Jesus Christ offers each of us.

He is the source of the greatest opportunity we will ever have, the opportunity to rise beyond what we think is possible, to become more, to conquer more.

He said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

That abundance isn’t just about success or achievement. It’s about purpose, growth, peace, and becoming who we were meant to be.

At MTN OPS, one of our core values is OPPORTUNITY:

We foster an atmosphere that gives you and others an opportunity to rise to your full potential.

As I reflect on my father’s life, I realize that this value is not just something we say, it’s something we are called to live.

We have the chance every day to create that kind of environment for others, to see people for who they can become, to believe in them, to encourage them, to love them into their potential.

And it starts with us.

It starts with recognizing the opportunity we’ve been given to grow, to lead, to connect more deeply with our purpose, and to strengthen our relationship with the Savior.

My challenge to you is simple:

Lean into that opportunity.

Seek Him. Connect more fully. Discover the greater abundance of life that comes through Him.

Because when we do, we don’t just change ourselves, we help create opportunities for everyone around us to rise as well.

This is How We Conquer!
